Holistic Health Care – What and Whom

The Baby boomers-those born 1946 through 1964-are the largest population to require health care than ever before. Medical practitioners and pharmaceutical companies are focusing on what pills, potions or surgeries the baby boomers-turned seniors will be likely to use in the next 30 – 40 years. Ironically, the majority of people tend to be concerned about their health after something major has occurred. The truth is if we consistently take good care of our health the aging process has little impact.

Baby boomers are voicing their concerns about better health, more than prior generations. However, many do not know where to find information and options, other than Traditional Western Medicine (TWM).

Few people research the plethora of side effects for prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs-not to mention that prescription and OTC drugs are formulated to take over and hijack your body's biochemistry. Prescription and OTC drugs force blood pressure to be lower / higher or force the liver to stop manufacturing healthy cholesterol. In fact, prescription or OTC drugs interfere with normal human metabolism, and that is one reason why prescription drugs are killing people. Yet, conventional medical doctors rely on propaganda about the unknown side effects of holistic health care to convince people that only prescription or OTC drugs are safe. It is NOT that they are terrified about the side effects of holistic health care-they are terrified of people being well and they will not have their business of prescribing life-long pills and potions. Western Medicine is profit driven.

If everyone knew they could prevent any disease with plant extracts, medicinal herbs, natural vitamins, minerals, and supplements, as well as having peace of mind-the pharmaceutical and medical industry would collapse overnight.

O The World Health Organization, estimates that between 65 to 80 percent of the world's population (about 3 billion people) relly on naturopathic or homeopathic medicine as their primary form of health care.

O Worldwide, only 10 to 30 percent of people use traditional medicine, 70 to 90 percent use naturopathic and homeopathic health care.

O 74 percent of the American population desires a natural approach to health care.

O Of the one out of three Americans who say they have used natural techniques, 84 percent said they would use it again.

O Traditional Chinese Medicine has been chosen by the World Health Organization for worldwide propagation to meet the health care needs of the twenty-first century.

O The US government sponsors the use of acupuncture in drug rehabilitation programs.

O "In a [Mayo Clinic] study of 50 patients, six acupuncture treatments given over two to three weeks significantly improved their symptoms of pain and fatigue." Time, 2005

O "Americans make more visits to holistic health care providers (some 600 million a year) than to MDs and spend more money out-of-pocket to do so about $ 30 billion a year by recent estimates." Newsweek, 12/2002

O "A recent study performed by the American Massage Therapy Association revealed that 28 percent of people received a massage from a massage therapist in the past five years, up from 17 percent in 1997. Eighteen percent said they had a massage in the past 12 months . That's 10 percent higher than was reported in 1997. " American Massage Therapy Association, 8/2002.

The Journal of the American Medical Association Vol. 284 July 26, 2000, published an article documenting the tragedy of Traditional Western Medicine (TWM) paradigm. The author, Dr. Barbara Starfield of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health. Doctors, she stated, are the third leading cause of death in the US, causing 250,000 deaths every year.

This information is a follow-up to the Institute of Medicine report December, 1999, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

DEATHS PER YEAR:

1. 12,000 —– unnecessary surgery

2. 7,000 —– medication errors in hospitals

3. 20,000 —- other errors in hospitals

4. 80,000 —- infections in hospitals

5. 106,000 — non-error, negative effects of drugs

250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic – death induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy, especially of a complication of treatment causes – is outrageous !! Yet, the majority of people continue to trust the medical profession to 'cure' them, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

Of 13 countries in a recent comparison, the United States ranks an average of 12th (second from the bottom) for 16 available health indicators. The ranking of the US on several indicators was:

O 13th (last) for low-birth-weight percentages

O 13th for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall 14

O 11th for post neonatal mortality

O 13th for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes)

O 11th for life expectancy at 1 year for females, 12th for males

O 10th for life expectancy at 15 years for females, 12th for males

O 10th for life expectancy at 40 years for females, 9th for males

O 7th for life expectancy at 65 years for females, 7th for males

O 3rd for life expectancy at 80 years for females, 3rd for males

O 10th for age-adjusted mortality

The poor performance of the US medical profession was recently confirmed by a World Health Organization study, which used different data and ranked the United States as 15th among 25 industrialized countries.

The Italian Food Pyramid

The Italian food pyramid is a version of the US Department of Agriculture food pyramid but aimed at those who use them a Mediterranean diet, or Italian diet. The original food pyramid was designed to try and reverse the growing trend of heart disease and other diseases caused by bad nutrition and bad diet. In the US this is because the population has more than tendency to eat junk food and skimp on the essential vitamins provided by fruits and vegetables.

So how does the Italian food pyramid differ? The Italian food pyramid basically concentrates on more of the foods that make up the Mediterranean diet. There is much more of an emphasis on eating foods that have a plant origin. Not only are fruits and vegetables eaten a lot more by the Italians and Mediterranean’s, but they also eat many more grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, olives, and olive oil. This is always going to make for good healthy food, packed with vitamins and minerals. There is also much more emphasis on eating fish and shellfish at least twice a week.

Is been shown over the last few years that the healthiness of the Mediterranean diet has got a lot to do with the fact that Italians and Mediterranean on the whole have far less chronic diseases which are associated with the Western diet such as heart attacks and strokes etc. The Italian food pyramid is one of the most nutritious food pyramids in the world. It is also one of the tastiest food pyramids to follow. Italian cuisine, along with all Mediterranean cuisines, incorporates some of the best foods that are grown in the region.

5 Dangers of Triathlon

Having been involved with triathlon for the past 5 years as both a coach and a top age group finisher I have come to realize that the sport of triathlon has a great many rewards to offer. It can be a very intoxicating sport and really boost one’s self-esteem. Pushing new limits and realizing what your body is actually capable of doing when appropriate training techniques/coaching and some discipline in both training and nutrition are put in place. However, there is a dark side to this sport and I intend on providing what I consider to be the 5 most common pitfalls TO IRONMAN DISTANCE training I have experienced and witnessed in my time in this sport. I specifically single out the full Ironman distance mainly because of its excessiveness. These 5 dangers I am about to list do not really pertain to the shorter distance events in my opinion.

5 Pitfalls to Ironman Distance Triathlon:

1) Over-Training: This is a no brainer but it has to be #1 since this is where most other problems stem from. However, even if one is not over-trained there are still issues that will cause one to question the training commitment required in time to properly prepare for an Ironman event.

2) The “Dehumanization” factor that has been written about previously and can be elaborated upon in this 1989 Sports Illustrated Vault article (Please see link below to article.). To sum Nicholas Dawidoff’s article up: Even if you are not over-trained, the time spent away from family and friends can create a situation in which one loses the feeling that they even belong to a family/community. The extreme narcissism of focusing one’s attention so deeply on their training/diet/recovery begins to negatively impact their relationships with family, friends and co-workers.

3) Divorce. Again, this can be a by product of over-training or just the fact that you are never around your significant other. Relationships require time as well. If you are out biking, running and swimming during all your free time then you are not at home spending quality time with your spouse. This puts excessive strain on any relationship.

4) Cost. Triathlon is not a cheap sport by any means. Once you decide you want to be an “Ironman” the costs can sky rocket. The registration fee alone is upwards of $400-$500 for an Ironman Event. Not to mention the cost of traveling to the event with yourself and your bike. Speaking of bike,,, the wheels alone can set you back a significant amount of money before you even have a bike. Then there is the power meter, the GPS device, the wet suit, the shoes, and yes….the coaching.

5) Suppressed immune system, injury, and osteoporosis ( http://www.usatriathlon.org/resources/multisport-zone/fuel-station/the-endurance-athlete-and-osteoporosis ). Most individuals who compete in endurance sports are at risk of all of the above. Osteoporosis, especially due to poor nutrition, but also due to the fact that very few endurance athletes lift weights. Swimming and cycling are non-weight bearing activities. Ah! but running is? Running is, but only for the lower legs. Running does nothing for the upper body in terms of building bone density.

There you have it. The 5 pitfalls to Ironman racing and training. This is not meant to be an all inclusive list but is a list of what I have both personally experienced and witnessed in the sport of triathlon. This does not mean one should not attempt to race an Ironman event either. However, those participants should realize the pitfalls and the possible shortcomings of this race. There seems to be this collective acceptance that you are in excellent shape when training/competing at the Ironman distance. However, how one defines “shape” or “fitness” is usually in there place in the final age group results. This is all well and good. However, don’t confuse fitness with health. Being incredibly fit does not necessarily mean one is in good health. Like your grandmother always said….”Everything in moderation.”

Allowing Students to Choose Physical Education Activities: The New And Advantageous Way To Teach

Imagine, it’s 11 AM and you are in high school. You just finished your second class of the day and you are heading towards the gymnasium. During this three minute walk towards the gymnasium you stop and talk to your friends, say hi to an old teacher, and try and come up with a good excuse to get out of playing softball today. You hate softball and are even more upset because you are forced to play this game by your teacher. You arrive to class with a poor excuse and are forced to change for class. You go into the locker room, change for class, and walk into the gym dismayed at the fact that yet another day in physical education is spent doing something you don’t enjoy.

This is a thought running through many average teenager’s minds on an every day basis. Many students do not like what they are learning in physical education and refuse to participate in something they have no interest in. Many teachers are content with allowing students to sit out or just stand around during class and let it affect their grade. Is this doing any good? Is the job of a teacher really getting done? Absolutely not, the job of a teacher, specifically a Physical education teacher, is to teach students different healthy and active things they can do as a part of their lifetime fitness. Of course they are their to get their “required fitness time” in, but are they really doing anything about their fitness as they sit and watch half the class play a game they do not like? Are teachers helping fight the growing obesity rates by allowing students to not participate and let their grade suffer?

The solution to fighting the plague of students sitting out of physical education is adopting the style of Elective Physical Education. Elective Physical Education is exactly what it sounds like it is, Elective. The students get to choose which activity they want to participate in for that specific unit. The teachers get together and lay out a certain amount of different activities that the students can choose from to participate in during that time period. Then on the first day of each unit, the activities are all explained and the students choose which activity they will participate in. Now instead of students feeling forced into participating in something they do not enjoy, they have a choice of what they want to do, and what they will actively participate in.

There is a concern about how to make sure a broad variety of activities are covered by each student and to make sure they get proper exposure to different skills, athletic events, and fitness techniques. Each unit should have a specific theme such as team sports, individual sports, lifetime fitness, cardiovascular fitness, leisure activities and much more. By laying out multiple choices within each unit allows for teachers to maximize time on task. Students will be more involved in the lesson, and teachers will spend less time trying to get everyone involved.

A major emphasis should be put on allowing the student to find something he or she likes and getting them involved. This is especially important when talking about lifetime fitness activities because this is where our teaching is going to affect the student the most. If every student can attend a class that they enjoy participating in and gain a new found love for a lifetime fitness activity, then as Physical Education teachers we have done our job in helping to keep our population healthy and active.

Social figure heads, such as First Lady Michelle Obama, have taken it into their own hands to help fight obesity in the United States. The first lady conducted a fitness day in which hundreds of students joined her in participating in a physical activity to help fight obesity. It is in using Elective Physical education that this can really make an impact on fighting obesity. We want every student to learn about how to stay healthy and how activity can help burn calories and keep them in a healthy physical shape. For one specific unit each activity can focus on checking one’s heart rate, calculating calories burned per class, and measuring other health factors that are important to our physical fitness. Many students think that the only way to burn calories is to walk or run around the block. They need to be shown that while playing tennis they burn so many calories, or while they participate in expressive dance their heart rate reaches eighty percent of their maximum heart rate. Showing students that while participating in a variety of activities can be beneficial to their health is very important. Allowing the students to choose the activity is even more important because they will then have an interest in this subject area and will hopefully continue to participate int his activity outside of the gymnasium at their high school.

Now imagine its 3 PM, you are getting into your moms car on the way home from school and she asks you how your day was. You tell her about the A you got back on your math test, and the project you have due in history, then you tell her about how much fun you had in physical education. You tell her it is because you got to choose the activity you are going to do for the whole week and in doing that you learned how beneficial this activity is to your health. You tell her how you can’t wait to walk to class tomorrow at 11 AM and go right back to were you left off today.

Subliminal Perception – How it Works

What is subliminal perception? Does it really affect your mind and behavior? Subliminal CDs and programs are one of the most recent tools in the self-development field that offers the promise of helping people make dramatic life changes conveniently, inexpensively and with little effort. But, to what degree does subliminal programming work?

Subliminal Perception, A Natural Process…

Perception is the natural, normal way you receive impressions from your environment. Subliminal refers to information that is perceived below the level of conscious awareness. Normally, you pay conscious attention to a very small percentage of information that you experience through our sense and your mind. Try this test: take a moment to focus your attention on the sounds around you and you will discover there are many background noises you normally completely ignore…consciously that is. These sounds probably include traffic noise, machinery, conversations, birds, insects, etc. Nevertheless you are aware of this constant bombardment of stimuli, even though it is perceived below your conscious awareness by your extremely receptive and sensitive subconscious mind.

Interest in subliminal communication first developed shortly after Freud presented his revolutionary idea that we all have a hidden, unconscious mind. One of Freud’s contemporaries, Dr. O. Poetzle, developed and tested theories related to the effect of subliminal stimulation on dream content. In 1917, Poetzle was the first scientist to demonstrate the close relationship between subliminal stimuli and posthypnotic suggestion. His discovery, called the Poetzle Effect, indicates that subliminal perceptions evoke dreams and actions days or weeks after the original perception.

In the last 50 years, many hundreds of carefully controlled scientific studies have been conducted on subliminal perception. An abundance of scientific data resulting from decades of research indicates that subliminal perception does occur and information perceived subliminally does affect the unconscious or subconscious mind. And most importantly, subliminal programming has been shown to be an effective tool for influencing and changing behavior. Controversy over subliminal stimuli arises precisely because it does influence people’s behavior without their conscious awareness.

Subliminal Messages Used in Stores to Reduce Shoplifting…

It was discovered that subliminal messages could be masked in music or other audio programs. An article in TIME magazine in 1979, titled, ‘Secret Voices,’ reported that nearly 50 department stores in the U.S. and Canada were using subliminal messages in the music systems to reduce shoplifting and employee theft. One East Coast chain was reported to have reduced theft by 37%, amounting to the phenomenal savings of $600,000 over a nine-month period.

A similar story in the WALL STREET JOURNAL in 1980 stated the installation of a subliminal message system in a New Orleans supermarket accounted for a drop in pilferage loss from almost $50,000 per six months to ‘the astounding figure of less than $13,000’ – an all time low! Cashier shortages dropped from $125 per week to less than $10 per week. Subliminal messages found to be effective were statements like, “I take a great deal of pride in being honest. I will not steal. I am honest.”

Scientific Evidence: Subliminal Messages Influence Behavior

Extensive Documentation of Subliminal Perception

In his scholarly work titled “Preconscious Processing,” Dr. Norman Dixon, a psychologist at University College in London, England, summarizes 748 scholarly research studies on subliminal perception.

Included in Dixon’s authoritative work is a research study by Zuckerman (1960), that revealed a subliminal stimulus can by-pass conscious intent, and that it makes it unlikely a person would resist instructions which are not consciously experienced. Zuckerman required his subjects to write stories around Thematic Apperception Test cards. Superimposed on the ambiguous pictures on the cards were either the subliminal message, “Write More” or “Don’t Write.” As long as the instructions were subliminal, these messages had the desired effect. However, as soon as they were able to be perceived consciously, the messages had no consistent effect.

Behavioral Improvements Result from Subliminal Messages…

Dr. Lloyd H. Silverman, a psychologist at New York University, has been at the forefront of subliminal testing for 20 years. His work, with over 40 groups of subjects, has shown significant improvements in behavior after exposure to selected subliminal messages. IN a 1980 study, Silverman incorporated a subliminal message into a treatment of half of a group of smokers trying to quit smoking using behavior modification therapy. One month after treatment ended, 66% of the group exposed to the activating subliminal stimulus were still non-smokers, compared with 13% of the control group. Silverman says the positive effect of subliminal messages has been observed in assertiveness training classes, adolescents receiving psychotherapy, college students in group therapy, alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous counseling, and in people undergoing behavior modification for insect phobias and overeating.

Subliminal Messages Improve Academic Performance…

An article in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Volume 29, 1982, reports on a study by Dr. Kenneth Parker, a psychologist at Queens College in New York. Dr. Parker’s research project was designed to see if subliminal messages can improve academic performance. Sixty students received visual subliminal messages using a light-flashing device called a tachistoscope. Three times a week, before class, the students looked through the eyepiece of the tachistoscope and saw a fast flash of bright light, nothing more. In the four millisecond flash was embedded a single sentence. The class was divided into three groups, each receiving a different message. Two messages were designed to enhance academic performance; the third was a control.

Careful statistical analysis of the results of the subliminal stimulation revealed significant improvement in academic performance. Groups one and two, receiving activating subliminal messages achieved average grades in the range of a high B to low A. Group three, the control, received an average grade in the low B range. In addition, those who received subliminal messaged had higher retention of the learned material after one month than the control group had.

Medical Clinic Uses Subliminal Tapes to Reduce Fainting, Smoking, and Temper Flare Ups…

In 1951, Dr. Hal Becker, a behavioral scientist and former member of the Tulane University Medical Staff, began investigating subliminal processes. Dr. Becker has published dozens of research articles which support the effectiveness of subliminal stimulation. One of Dr. Becker’s investigations, presented in a scientific paper to the Ninth Annual Conference of Computer Medicine in Atlanta in 1979, involved the use of subliminal stress reduction messages incorporated into the sound system at the McDonagh Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. A seven-month trial produced dramatic results. Fainting caused by needle pain dropped to nearly zero, smoking in the staff lounge was cut as much as 79%, and the temper flare-ups in the crowded patient waiting room were reduced by nearly 60%. When the subliminal messages were stopped, these problems returned to former levels.

Subliminal Tapes Influence Dramatic Weight Loss…

Becker’s research has shown that the use of subliminal messages can influence weight-loss with astounding results. In Metairie, Louisiana, at Dr. Becker’s weight loss clinic, patients were exposed to videotape and audio cassette subliminal messages as part of a behavior-modification diet plan. One woman lost 100 pounds in one year’s time. In a follow-up study, Becker found that 50% of the patients maintained at lease half their weight loss for up to two years after leaving the subliminal program, while 23% maintained 75% to 100% of their loss. This is a significantly better record than that of diet programs not accompanied by subliminal messages.

Another subliminal stimulation weight-loss study involved two experiments conducted by Silverman, Martin, Ungaro and Mendelsohn (1978) with two groups of overweight women. In addition to traditional diet therapy, half of the subjects received subliminal affirmations and half received neutral subliminal message stimulation. In both experiments, the groups receiving the positive subliminal messages lost more weight than the control groups. The group receiving subliminal affirmations continued to lose weight even after the experiment concluded.

Positive Proof Mind Absorbs Subliminal Information…

In another of Dr. Becker’s controlled tests of subliminal perception, experimental and control groups were asked to guess a three-digit number. The experimental group was exposed to the number subliminally embedded in a hissing sound known as ‘pink noise.’ In three separate experiments, an average of 77% of those exposed to the subliminal numbers guessed correctly, compared to only 10% of those in the control group (who weren’t exposed to the numbers). This confirms that subliminal messages are perceived at a non-conscious level.

HOW YOU CAN USE SUBLIMINAL PERCEPTION FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Research indicates that subliminal perception takes place when the subconscious portion of the mind is exposed to messages below the level of conscious awareness. Subliminal audio and video recordings are proving to be a safe and effective, easy and convenient, inexpensive and enjoyable way people can bring about profound personal change in their lives.

Programming the Subconscious Mind to Create Your Reality…

Did you know that your mind creates your reality? It’s true. The functioning of the mind can be readily understood when considered in terms of the widely accepted view that the mind has both conscious and subconscious portions. The conscious portion of your mind is rational, logical and analytical. It questions and modifies incoming information from your sense before the information is stored in your subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is non-analytical and houses the motivating forces that direct your conscious actions, thoughts, and habits. It affects your attitudes, how you feel, and what you do. The beliefs and thoughts you hold in your subconscious mind build and shape every aspect of your life.

In other words, your subconscious is what actually creates your life. This is why it is important to discover how to access the subconscious to remove negative, self-limiting beliefs and replace them with positive, life-enhancing beliefs.

The Secret of Subliminal Recordings

The secret of why subliminal recordings are so effective is simple: the positive messages on the tape directly access the subconscious mind. Other widely used self-improvement techniques work only on a conscious level. Unlike those methods, subliminal recordings permit you to work directly with that portion of your mind which actually maintains ongoing control of your life. You must effect change at a subconscious level if you want to make lasting improvements in your life.

Another reason subliminal programs and CD’s are so effective is that they permit positive messages to reach the subconscious without interference or modification from the conscious mind. This is important because often your conscious mind will question or reject certain statements that it knows are not presently true. For example, if you are using positive affirmations such as, “I am successful,” yet you know that success is not presently a part of your life, your conscious mind can negate the positive effect of the statement by rejecting it. Because subliminal messages bypass the conscious mind, the conscious mind cannot question or reject them.

Within your subconscious mind is the raw material that will automatically from your life tomorrow. Subliminal tapes and CD’s provide you with a powerful tool to imprint on your subconscious the positive images that you select as the basis for creating the kind of life you want. The information your subconscious mind accepts through subliminal perception becomes the new mental programming that changes your life and propels you toward your goals.

A Word of Caution: Not all Subliminal Tapes & CD’s are Equal…

Subliminal stimulation has been scientifically validated as a means to bring about desired behavioral change. However, not all subliminal tapes and CD’s are equal; their effectiveness depends on tow key factors: the content of the subliminal messages and the quality of production-including the engineering and electronic mixing of the sound recordings.

Certain production methods used by some companies claiming to contain 100,000 or more subliminal affirmations are of very questionable at best. In order to produce recordings with this number of affirmations per hour, the voice track must be speeded up until it becomes an unintelligible high-pitched squeal and or/ multi-layered many, many times until there is only a garbled confusion of sounds.

While 100,000 affirmations per hour may make attractive advertising copy, there is no documented evidence that the squeal of a high – speed sound track or the garbled confusion of many multi-layered tracks can be understood by the subconscious mind. In fact, the vast majority of scientific experiments that have been done on subliminal programs were done with surprisingly few affirmative statements. In fact, in the study referenced earlier by Dr. Parker, the students were only exposed to a very few subliminal statements at each session, and yet because the statements were carefully constructed, the results were dramatically positive.

There exists NO scientific proof that the subconscious makes meaningful responses to any input that is unintelligible. In fact, the overwhelming consensus from both professionals and the literature suggests that a subliminal verbal communication should be delivered slowly and methodically.

The importance of the content of the messages used on subliminal tapes and CD’s can’t be overemphasized. It is critical that the affirmations be positive since certain negative or aversive subliminal statements may not only decrease the effectiveness of the tape or CD, they may even be counterproductive. It is wise for anyone using subliminal programs to be aware of not only how the tapes and CD’s are made, but what messages are on them. Having a script of the exact statements on a subliminal program is invaluable. It will serve not only to inform you of the nature and content of the subliminal messages that will be programming your subconscious mind, but it can also serve as resource for conscious reinforcement.

WHO USES SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS & CD’S

Clinics, Hospitals, & Medical Professionals…

There is a rapidly increasing professional awareness of the effectiveness of subliminal programming in the fields of medicine and behavioral therapy. An increasing number of medical professionals and clinics are using our subliminals as a powerful supplement to conventional treatment programs. Subliminals are effectively used to create a relaxed, harmonious atmosphere, to promote healing and more rapid recovery. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS

Question: How do you use subliminal programs?

Answer: Subliminal mental programming is a passive process, relying on the natural ability of the subconscious mind to absorb information below the normal range of your conscious awareness. No active involvement, concentration, or relaxation is necessary for subliminal programs to work successfully.

Subliminal programs can be used anytime your like, day or night. Simply play the program in the background as you go about your daily activities. The programs do not have to be played at high volume. As long as you can hear the music or environmental sounds, your subconscious mind will pick up the subliminal suggestions in the program. They can be played as a soft, soothing background all day or night, even while listening to other music or TV. You can also soften the effect even further by adjusting the tone controls on your player.

Subliminal programs can be listened to anytime day or night while you are doing virtually any activity-relaxing, reading, studying, eating, talking on the phone, at the office, while you are exercising.

QUESTION: DO YOU SUGGEST USING MORE THAN ONE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAM AT A TIME?

ANSWER: The effectiveness of our subliminal programs can be compounded by using a compatible assortment of titles. However, in order to avoid overloading yourself, we recommend not working on more than 2 or 3 behavioral changes at a time. Programs not having to do with addictions or major life changes can be used together very effectively and will often work together to positively reinforce one another.

QUESTION: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I LISTEN TO THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS?

ANSWER: You can’t really overdo listening to positive programs. The more often you listen, the faster you will begin to see results. It is recommended that you play your subliminal programs at least once a day and more often if possible. If you want to strengthen the effect of the programs and get results more quickly, listen to them several times each day and night.

QUESTION: HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT RESULTS FROM USING THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS?

ANSWER: For many people there are immediate, observable, and in some cases, dramatic results after listening to our subliminal programs only a few times. However, because each person is unique, results will vary from person to person. Remember, it has taken years to create the life you have today. The results of listening to subliminal messages are cumulative, so the desired changes will occur provided sufficient repetitions and time are allowed for all levels of your consciousness to absorb the new positive programming. Almost everybody will be able to see positive improvement in 60 days or less.

QUESTION: ONCE I HAVE ACHIEVED RESULTS, DO I NEED TO CONTINUE LISTENING TO THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAM?

ANSWER: If you are using a subliminal program to help you reach a specific goal, such as losing twenty pounds or quitting smoking, once you have achieved the goal, you may have no need to continue using the tape. However, many people find it helpful to continue playing the subliminal programs from time to time for positive reinforcement. If you feel a desire to return to an old habit such as smoking or eating foods that cause you to gain weight, we suggest you use the subliminal programs again regularly until the desire passes. You may wish to use some of our subliminal programs on an ongoing basis whenever you feel the need. This applies particularly to such titles as Stress Reduction, Start the Day Great, Stop Procrastination, and our many spiritual titles. The main principle is to use the programs as long as or as often as you feel you want or need their benefits.

Subliminal programs provide you with an effective and pleasant way to bring about lasting personal change. We combine the most advanced electronic technology with the latest scientific knowledge of how the mind works and how behaviors are determined to provide you with state-of-the-art subliminal programming. Many thousands have found that using our subliminal programs helped them improve their lives and achieve positive results that seem almost miraculous!

The Ninja 1100 – Is It a Blender or a Food Processor?

The Ninja 1100 has been uniquely programmed for controlled processing.

It is a two-for-the-price-of-one kitchen system as it provides the functions of a blender as well as a food processor and also makes pulps of whole fruit and crushes ice.

It has one ‘control box’ area on which either one of the two containers can fit, each with its own blades and other attachments.

This is no ordinary blender or mixer and the ‘base’ contains some innovative controls providing a unique system.

These controls are based on pre-selected speeds called ‘pulses’ and they are used for the controlled processing: Pulse 1 (Dough) Pulse 2 (Blend) Pulse 3 (Crush)

Pulse 1 is a slow speed that can powerfully mix dough using up to 1 ½ lbs. of flour. Ingredients are put into the bowl and the dough hook works slowly at first until all the ingredients are incorporated and then speeds up to mix the dough until it is of the desired consistency.

This is called SmartSpeed. It does not go faster, but remains at a steady, pre-selected speed to mix the dough into a ball. At this point the Ninja’s job is over and the cook takes over, proving and baking the dough. The difficult part of the job was done by the Ninja.

Pulse 2 – Blender Function. This is the speed at which smoothies are made using the quad blade 4 in the 40-oz. Bowl. These blades are razor-sharp and can shave pieces off a fingernail and worse, so handle it with care.

Smoothies are made with milk and fruit and ice. This is a sort of basic mix, but the combinations are endless. Buy a recipe book and try out the many different smoothies, fruit and vegetable blends.

Pulse 3 – (Crush) is used to make frozen drinks and crush frozen fruit and ice. The quad blade with 6 blades and the 72-oz pitcher is used and this is where Margaritas are made. It is easy and quick. Just put the makings for the drink together, add ice and let the machine go for as long as necessary. It is usually done in a few seconds.

Make juice as well on Pulse 3 using the whole fruit without peeling. If these are a bit thick, thin it down with water. Some people prefer these thick juices containing the whole fruit, peel and all, while others prefer the thinner juices mage in juice extractors where the pulp is separated from the juice. The 72-oz container is most often used for making frozen drinks.

The Pulse 3 allows for the high speeds necessary to beat egg whites for meringues, using the whisk.

The Ninja 1100 Kitchen System has a unique set of controls that enables it to perform all its functions really well.

Restaurant Training – Waitress and Waiter Training to Fuel Sales for Hospitality and Food Service

Did you know that your restaurant can make more than $100,000 (based on serving 300 customers a day) over the next year by training your waiters and waitresses how to become top sales people? It takes only a few extra seconds for your wait staff to enthusiastically offer suggestions to build add-on sales and increase checks averages. Developing a solid sales training program that focuses on suggestive selling and making sales training one of your top priorities is essential to driving your profit.

Training your wait staff to become top sales performers and making your dining room a profit center is essential to the growth of your restaurant, especially in a sluggish economy. Here are some key selling ideas and specific training strategies:

The Menu: A Server’s Sales Brochure

A sales person can not sell properly unless they have obtained the necessary product knowledge. You will benefit by having your team know the menu inside out-yes, that means having them sample every item and learning details such as descriptions, sizes/portions and ingredients. When servers are unfamiliar with food and beverage items, they will lack the confidence they need to sell. Would you buy a computer from a dealer who has no experience operating the model you are interested in? Probably not.

According to Ray Barshay, the owner of River Grille Restaurant and Crabby Joe’s Deck and Grill in Florida, “To keep sales a priority, we place two to three dinner specials on our tables at pre-shift meetings and have servers taste them so they have a solid idea of the flavor. Then, we ask them to fully describe the features and benefits of each item. Being equipped with this knowledge builds our servers confidence to effectively sell to our customers.”

At Five-Star Training, we recommend to our clients to provide every server with at least two hours of suggestive selling training upon hiring covering all the basics. Then, as ongoing refreshers, each server should attend pre-shift meetings that touch on core sales strategies. This is a good time to implement sales contests to drive sales motivation. It is a positive habit to fully retrain your servers every six months with at least another two hours. If servers are not recharged, they will run dry. Knowledge is power and power breeds confidence. The more your servers know, the more your profit will grow.

Up-selling and Making Add-On Sales

So how can you earn an extra $100,000 each year? It’s simple: Train your wait staff to sell an average of $1 more per customer by specifically teaching them to:

• Upgrade alcoholic beverages (sell a call instead of a well, a premium instead of a call, or suggest frozen specialty and premium drinks)

• Offer to add meat, poultry, or seafood to a salad

• Suggest sides such as mushrooms on steaks and French fries with sandwiches

The following menu items offered to an entire table will also average to $1.00 more per customer:

• Offer one dessert for the table to share or a dessert to go

• Suggest one carafe or bottle of wine/champagne per table

• Recommend one appetizer per table for everyone to share

Four Key Selling Strategies

Here are some additional ideas to teach your wait staff how to effectively sell:

Encourage them to…

Sell with enthusiasm and a smile-show excitement about what you are suggesting. The more enthusiasm generated about a menu item (your favorite), the more likely the customer will order it. For example, say: “Our frozen chocolate Mudslide is outrageous and made with real Godiva chocolate”

Sell the Benefits-tell the customer how they can benefit from a particular food/beverage item. Here are some examples:

• Combination appetizers/entrees, so the customer can sample a variety of items

• Large platters to satisfy hearty appetites

• Frozen thirst-quenching drinks on hot days such as Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris

• Name-brand liquor for a smooth and flavorful taste

• Wine to complement the entree

Sell routinely and during all courses of the dining process-the

more frequently you offer suggestions, the greater the opportunity you will have to increase sales. Keep customers’ minds on food. When they are enjoying one course, preview the next course. For example, say: “Save room for our Krazy Kahlua Koffee.” Be sure to have at least two of your favorites ready to suggest for every course.

Recognize key selling clues-listen carefully to what the customers say. You may hear some clues that will signal greater sales opportunities. Here are some common phrases:

• Customers who are celebrating…”It is our anniversary/birthday.” (bottle of wine/champagne)

• Customers with hearty appetites…”I’m starved.” (large Captain’s Platter)

• Customers inviting your suggestions…”What do you suggest?” (your favorites)

Always take the time to properly train your waiters and waitresses and provide them with the key training tools to make them successful sales people. By developing a solid sales training program within your organization, you are sure to expand bottom-line profits with minimal effort by your wait staff.

Please Note: Always train your wait staff to be aware of the signs of intoxication and to avoid overselling alcohol. Teach your staff to refuse selling any alcohol to minors.

In Search of German Chocolate Ice Cream

I have always loved German chocolate cake not for the cake itself, but rather for the wonderful filling! I could eat a bowl of the filling with no problem! A few years ago, I “discovered” Haagen Dazs German chocolate ice cream and gave it a try. It was, needless to say, delicious. My enjoyment however, was short lived because it was only a seasonal-type flavor. Over the next few years, I faithfully checked the Haagen Dazs display in EVERY grocery store I visited but to no avail. I only ran across it one other time – hardly enough to satisfy my palate! Then a few months ago, while visiting my neighborhood Smith’s, I found a German chocolate ice cream under the supermarket’s “Private Selection” label. I bought it and couldn’t wait to get home to taste it. My excitement unfortunately was short lived; the flavor fell far short of my expectations. I finally realized the only way I was going to get any gratification for my ice cream craving was if I made it myself.

Making this specialty ice cream involves a two step process: creating the German chocolate filling and preparing the chocolate ice cream. I immediately went searching for recipes. I make German chocolate filling in my kitchens at work but I don’t need twenty pounds of it! I had to find a recipe with a considerably smaller yield. I visited several websites and found similar recipes. Since I knew what ingredients the recipe should contain, I picked one from Allrecipes.com that matched my criteria. For the ice cream portion, I modified a recipe I selected from Mable and Gar Hoffman’s 1981 book, “Ice Cream”. I substituted a smaller volume of Half and Half for regular whole milk to get a richer ice cream. The end result was delicious and a suitable substitute for the Haagen Dazs version I so craved. Although the ice cream is easy to make and does involve a few more steps, it is, in my opinion, well worth the effort.

As a side note, when I try this recipe in the future, I will only cook the German chocolate filling to about 170 degrees. I will also consider using a pastry bag and piping it into the finished ice cream that I have just removed from the machine. This procedure might give me more of a gooey filling to bite into instead of a firmer chunk.

German Chocolate Filling

1 cup sugar

1 cup evaporated milk

1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces

3 egg yolks

1 cup flaked coconut

1 cup finely chopped pecans

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine the sugar, evaporated milk and egg yolks in the top portion of a double boiler or in a large metal bowl. Add the butter pieces. Cook over simmering water, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened and it reaches 180 degrees on a thermometer. Remove from the water and stir in the coconut, pecans and vanilla. Cool to room temperature, then put in a smaller bowl or plastic container and cover by laying plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the filling. Refrigerate overnight. Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper and pipe or drop the filling in teaspoon size mounds onto the sheet. Freeze for at least two hours.

An important note – When I prepare German chocolate filling, whether it is at home or at work, I prefer to cook it over a double boiler instead of in a pot directly on over the heat. This allows me to do other things while the filling is cooking besides just standing over it and stirring. It also minimizes the risk of overcooking and scrambling the egg. While the filling is cooking, I prepare the ice cream base.

Chocolate Ice Cream

1-1/3 cups sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup whole milk

2 cups half and half

2 eggs, beaten

3 oz. semisweet chocolate, finely chopped (I used Trader Joe’s 70% chocolate bar – remember, better quality chocolate yields a better tasting ice cream)

4 oz. evaporated milk (if you purchase a 12oz. can, you will use 8 oz. in the filling recipe and the rest in this recipe)

1 cup whipping cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt in a medium saucepan. Stir in the milk and half and half. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to simmer. Place the beaten eggs in a small bowl. Stir about half of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, then pour it back into the remaining hot milk mixture in the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and immediately add the chopped chocolate. Stir until the chocolate has completely melted. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve. Stir in the evaporated milk, whipping cream and vanilla. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold (you could technically use the mixture after it has come to room temperature but it will take longer to freeze). Pour the mixture into the ice cream canister and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

While the mixture is freezing, put a large metal bowl in the freezer. Loosen the German chocolate filling chunks from the wax paper. When the ice cream is done, spoon it out into the bowl you kept in the freezer and stir in the German chocolate filling chunks. Put into a container and allow the ice cream to harden. Enjoy!

Heart Attack – Now No Longer a Distress

1. The most herculean Medicine: Food

I have personally followed a plant based diet for years now and it has done wonders to me. I would like to share few basic tips that could script a new beginning in your life. One thing that is worth mentioning here is for those who are skeptical about their age related to this barrier, age has nothing to do with this.

Be it 90 or 30 or even 20, you can follow it blindly. All we need is compassion and exuberating self- confidence to fight against this disease.

a. Have at least 5 cups of veggies a day.

It has been observed that some people are unshackled from the blind dependence that they tend to put on weight if they eat frequently. However the irony is that having eight or more servings a day would reduce the risk of this barrier by 30%as compared to those who consume one and a half servings or fewer. So it is recommended that you have at least 5 cups of fruits and vegetables a day. Let me mention here you can opt for berries – any berries like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries. These are excellent choices. For people who are simply bored of having fruits and vegetables on a daily basis- just chop them and prepare a green-based juice (with the fruits) in a blender. Believe me you will feel mint fresh.

b. Say Goodbye to monotonous life and make a welcome comeback

Our life style has undergone a sea change in the last few decades. Daily routine thrives primarily on sedentary work. Many of us would be surprised to learn that almost 75% are likely to develop metabolic syndrome, a cluster of problems that raise heart disease risk. So stop being a sederholmite and practice as much physical activity as you can. Design an Itinerary of small bouts of physical activity each day and do keep yourself motivated engage in some household chores.Walk as much as you can. As we all know that “Walking is a man’s best medicine”. In addition to this, going out for a brisk walk early in the morning while listening to bird’s chirp against the backdrop of a sunrise is in itself an exhilarating experience. You will feel energized and this also increases production of happy hormones. After all a happy heart is a healthy heart.

c. Make daily dose of this nutrient mandatory in your routine: “YOGA”

Empower your life with streaming yoga practices. Patients who are victim of the most prevalent heart rhythm perturbation- atrial fibrillation, practiced yoga for three months had fewer episodes. Many experts have reported that people who exercise daily even for 20 minutes, had lower resting heart rate and blood pressure compared to those who didn’t do the exercise.

So friends gear up yourself to make sure that you do not suffer from this disease or else be ready to face the music.

“What’s the world for if you can’t make it up the way you want it to be”.
